Streamline your bedroom for a more relaxing atmosphere

Everyone needs a place of sanctuary, where they can shut out the rest of the world and rejuvenate. For many of us, that place is our bedroom. It’s where we sleep, relax, dress and prepare ourselves for the day ahead. So, it is important that we love being in such an important room. One great way to bring peace and order to a bedroom is to streamline and reorganise it, getting rid of unnecessary clutter and making sure that you only keep beautiful, useful things that can be stored prettily and retrieved easily when you next need them.

The process of decluttering and rearranging storage really doesn’t have to cost much, if anything at all and it can make a huge difference to our mental health and quality of sleep. So, where to start?

Clothes storage

Go through your wardrobes, making sure that you only keep the clothes that you wear regularly and that make you feel good while wearing them. Once you have chosen what you want to keep, work out the best way to store them. They will look good for longer if you store them the right way, dedicating enough space for longer garments to hang properly, and plenty of shelf space to keep items such as jumpers and tops without having to cram them in on top of each other. A great solution for bedrooms of all sizes is to have in-built, sliding wardrobes that can be made to your exact specification.

If you have room, place a laundry hamper in your bedroom, so that you don’t feel tempted to leave clothes intended for the wash just laying around. This needn’t be massive or expensive, but it should be attractive, functional and matching the room’s general style.

Bedside table

Never let your bedside table get cluttered up with too much stuff and avoid the temptation of having a larger table that can hold more of your stuff, but also look cumbersome next to your bed. Once again, go through everything you have been keeping on your table to make sure you only keep what’s really important to you. Try to put as much stuff away, out of sight as you can, rather than building piles of junk – look in vintage shops for second-hand bedside cabinets with drawers or shelves.

Keep a shallow basket, or a bowl from the kitchen that you no longer use on the table to put valuables such as glasses, jewellery and your phone so they aren’t knocked on the floor by mistake. Once your table is decluttered, you will have more space to add some decorative touches, such as a vase of wild flowers or a framed family photo – again, simple pleasures that needn’t cost a fortune to acquire.

Bedding away

Another area where many of us suffer from owning too much and running out of storage is bedding – blankets, duvet covers, sheets and pillow cases. Be ruthless and get rid of anything that is faded, damaged or simply no longer to your taste. Look out for a vintage blanket box or trunk to store the rest in – these pieces of furniture can look beautiful and will also help keep the dust and moths away from your precious bedding.

Don’t forget to add a spring of lavender or a piece of cedar wood to help repel the moths and keep everything smelling lovely. If you have bulkier items that won’t fit in a trunk, such as pillows, cushions and bedspreads, consider storing them in wicker baskets for a countryside chic feel – baskets can be picked up very cheaply in all sorts of sizes and styles.

Final tips

Once your clothes are sorted, don’t forget to go through your jewellery and make sure it is stored in a safe place, but not so tucked away that you never get it out to wear and enjoy. Likewise, hair accessories, belts, scarves etc. Make the most of hidden storage areas, such as under the bed or at the bottom of your wardrobes. Just make sure you go through the belongings that are stored there regularly to make sure you still want them and that things don’t start to clutter up, unnoticed.

The more often you declutter and streamline a room, the less time each tidying session will take and the more satisfying the results will be. Make your bed daily and dust the surfaces of your newly decluttered bedroom to keep it looking clean, tidy and welcoming at the end of a busy day.
