When it comes to our bedrooms, we all want a beautiful boudoir; a safe haven where we can relax and unwind after a hard day at work. Unfortunately, decorating a bedroom to look exactly how we want it can be a costly task – luckily, there are ways around it. DIY is much, much easier than it sounds, and spending a Saturday morning at a car boot sale can be a lot of fun. Here are some simple ideas to help you create a room you can be proud of, at a price you will love.
Feature Wall
Surprisingly, something as simple as a feature wall can transform the look of your room instantly, and only decorating one wall extravagantly means you can save a heck of a lot of money. Feature walls are a great way of framing a bed or a dressing table, and because they are frequently decorated with patterned or brightly coloured wall paper, it leaves room to paint the other walls a much plainer colour such as white, which is nice and cheap to buy. A great way of creating a feature wall that you can change the look of as often as you like is to use blackboard paint to coat the wall. Blackboard paint is easy to come by and you can pick it up at most DIY outlets, but if you’re working to a tight budget and you have a creative side, then you can just as easily make your own – that way, the paint doesn’t have to be as stark a colour as black. This is an idea that can be adapted for other rooms in your home, too, and would make an equally wonderful feature in your kitchen.
Upcycle
Upcycling could not be simpler, and is something that has been done for many years in the form of ‘make-do-and-mend’. Money saving aside, it can also be a lot of fun, especially when it comes to rummaging and haggling at car boot sales. From large pieces of furniture, to finding the finishing touches that make your room a cosy place to fall asleep, there are so many places you can start to look when it comes to upcycling, and often using online forums such as Gumtree will help you to pick up items at huge discounts, or better yet, for free! Only source things that you know will be easy to fix and change to suit your taste. Old wooden or metal furniture is ideal for the upcycling process, and you can so easily give something that shabby chic effect with a piece of sandpaper and some duck egg blue paint.
Make Your Own Headboard
Headboards are relatively inexpensive to pick up, and a beautiful headboard can make the world of difference when it comes to making that plain old bed into something a little more special. Consider buying a headboard from retailers such as Bedz’R’Us and adapting it to make it really stand out. Something as simple as wrapping fairy lights or some pretty fabric around the metal bars can instantly change the look of your bed. You could even go one step further and alter the look of it completely by using the frame as a base and attaching things such as weathered pieces of wood or padded fabrics to them to create a whole new bed. There are plenty of tutorials online, and the materials to change them won’t dent your bank balance too much either.
It doesn’t take a lot to transform your tatty bedroom into something fit for a queen. There are so many ideas out there and they’re so easy to do. Do you have any dreamy DIY ideas for bedroom renovation? We’d love to hear from you.
