What to do when your boiler breaks – 8 top tips

I don’t know about you but one of the most important things for me about my home is that it is warm, that my central heating works and I have hot water to wash up, bathe and clean. Without my boiler working my home literally does not function or meet the needs of my family.

Here’s what you can do if  you have a problem with your boiler.

What to do when your boiler breaks

What to do when your boiler breaks – 8 top tips

Reset the boiler

Many boilers have a reset button. Check the user manual to see if a reset might fix the issue. If the boiler doesn’t respond to a reset or if the fault persists, further investigation may be needed and that’s when you might well need to make that call.

Check your pilot light

If you have an older boiler with a pilot light, check to see if it’s lit. If the pilot light is out, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for relighting it. If the light keeps going out, you may have an issue with the thermocouple or gas supply.

Check for leaks

Do take a really good look around the boiler and the pipework for any signs of leaks. If you notice a leak, it’s important to turn off the boiler and the water supply immediately. A leaking boiler can be a serious issue and WILL require professional repair.

Can you smell gas?

If you smell gas or your carbon monoxide alarm alerts you to a problem you have a serious issue and could impact both your safety and health. If you DO think there may be a gas leak, open your windows and if possible, turn off the gas at the mains.

At this point you need to call in an emergency boiler repair  – Plumbing Force provides fast, emergency plumbing and gas services, including boiler repairs, installations, and leak fixes.

Check the power supply

It is really important to firstly check that your boiler is switched on and that there is power going to it, if there isn’t  and if the boiler is connected to a fuse box, check for any blown fuses or tripped breakers.

Locate your paperwork

Find your boiler manual, any service history and your insurance – all of these documents may well come in handy!

Clear the area for your engineer

For anyone to work properly they need to have space to do so, so clear out your boiler cupboard or the workspace below your boiler.

Turn everything off and don’t use it

Don’t keep trying to use your heating if there is a problem, switch it off and wait for help.

Final thoughts

Look after your home and it will look after you and don’t take any chances! Always call in an expert if you need one.
