10 top tips for staying safe while doing DIY

My husband has hurt himself so many times doing DIY (not seriously hurt) but most definitely bashed himself about. Once, trying to fit a new loft ladder, he ended up dangling out of the loft just holding on by his finger tips as the ladder swayed away from him. Oh dear me it was funny, but not so much for him and it really wasn’t very safe.Another time trying to fit a safety catch to the loft he actually locked himself in it.We always hire someone now for loft jobs!

Anyway my point is that it is important to stay safe while doing DIY.

safe DIY

Here are my top tips:

If the project requires 2 people do not try to do it by yourself you will get in a pickle and it could well be unsafe.

Use the right safety equipment such as safety goggles or perhaps hard hats from safety stock

Make sure you are wide awake and fully concentrating

Make sure you take all necessary checks and no shortcuts e.g checking for live wires before you drill

Ensure kids and pets are well out the way they have a habit of tripping you up

Always read the instructions and if you don’t understand don’t proceed

Do not use faulty equipment, wobbly ladders can be so dangerous

Take time to prepare things properly e.move obstructions out the way, turn off water or electricity,

Take time to clear up properly e.g turning off equipment , removing tools from children’s reach

If the project is too hard for you and/or potentially dangerous, do not attempt it. You are more important.

Good luck with your DIY and stay safe!

Love these, keeping a clear work area is a good one, the amount of times I have tripped over the drill!

Haha shall show this to the other half – he was just cutting tiles on our landing shouting out that it wasn’t safe for anyone to come on to the landing and hoping for the best that the kids listened!

Very good tips Becky. My OH is not very competent at DIY. We always make sure our daughter is out of the way – mostly because of the swears!
